Manure Analysis Proficiency Testing Program Description

Manure Analyses

Analytical methods utilized in the MAP program are based on those developed by the NCR-13 work group and published by the University of Wisconsin. Copies of the methods manual will be available in March. Additional analytical parameters are under consideration for the 2004 proficiency program.

Analysis Parameters

  • Sample Moisture and Total Solids Content
  • ECe
  • NH4-N
  • Total Nitrogen (TN)
  • Total P1
  • Total K
  • Total Zn
  • Total Cu

For nitrogen analysis multiple methods are available, TKN and Combustion methods of determination.

Program Basics

The MAP program is based on the tri-annual submission of three manure sample materials (200 mL) for chemical analysis using reference methods of analysis. Samples will be shipped from the Minnesota Dept of Agriculture from Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Program results are statistically compiled and outlier values of individual laboratories identified. Warning limits are reported for each analysis based on a 90% confidence interval of the median using the median absolute deviation (MAD). Results will be provided on intra- and inter- laboratory precision to each participant within 30 days. An annual report will be prepared with an overview of the program quantifying inter and intra laboratory precision by method.

Fee Structure

Program fee is $200. For laboratories currently enrolled in the NAPT program Cost is $100. Sample Exchanges will occur in the months of April 2003, August 2003, November of 2003.
