Greenhouse Crops and Floriculture Research

Program Overview:

Research goals for floriculture and greenhouse production at Colorado State University include:

  • Modification of current irrigation technologies with the goal to reduce waste water and reduce fertilizer needs.
  • Determine water use rates of plants subjected to various irrigation delivery systems including recirculation.
  • Develop irrigation models that would be compatible with Colorado greenhouse conditions and adaptable to automated and manual irrigation systems.
  • Modify current fertility recommendations for popular greenhouse floral and vegetable crops based on efficient use of water fertilizer and recirculation strategies.

Under controlled conditions using various irrigation and fertility strategies, plant growth responses of popular greenhouse floral and vegetable crops are being monitored. Irrigation technologies studied include trickle tube, ebb and flood, overhead, and hand watering. Plant water status measurements are being integrated with selected environmental factors including but not limited to predicted temperature, light intensity, evapotranspiration, and vapor pressure deficits. Application strategies include traditional irrigation practices such as watering to 10% excess, watering scheduled by tensiometry, evaporation pan or vapor pressure deficit, and pulse irrigation. Currently available and alternative root-zone media are being evaluated in conjunction with the irrigation delivery systems. Systems that use recirculated water are also being incorporated as well as procedures for disinfection of recycled irrigation water. Several crops studied include popular bedding and pot crops, cut flower species and greenhouse vegetables common to the Colorado greenhouse industry. Media evaluated include traditional peat-based media as well as bark-based, rockwool, and alternative media amendments.
